Gibson Flying V Electric Guitar, Worn Cherry Satin

This review is from: Gibson Flying V Electric Guitar, Worn Cherry SatinAt this price this Gibson Flying V is a bargain. It looks cool, plays fast as the action is low, and it's light weight to get this axe easily rocking. I had my 10-year old play a little bit around on it, and he sounded like a like pro. I can't say enough good things about this cool axe, other than perhaps a tremolo would have been nice, and I like to mention that the Gibson Voodoo V made out of Swamp Ash was just a notch hotter in sound and the even lighter weight -- it was the ultimate V axe by Gibson and I hope they'll bring that one back some day. But for the time being, this Gibson Faded Flying V is good enough and once you play a few riffs on it, I think you too will fall in love with this axe....

This review is from: Gibson Flying V Electric Guitar, Worn Cherry SatinI know I'll get a lot of flak for this review, but I have to say what I truly feel. This is an outstanding guitar. It balances well, has superb playability, looks great and just makes you feel excited about holding it and playing! Having said that, here are the detracting factors:1. No hardcase (c'mon, for a guitar of this price is a gig bag really good enough?)2. Pickups not wax potted (just try cranking the volume of your Marshall stack to stage levels, and then suffer the uncontrolable howls issuing from these pickups, particularly the bridge pickup). The pickups are hot and the guitar sounds great, but seriously, how useable is it if you get such unmanageable noises caused for lack of a few cents worth of potting wax? Does Gibson seriously consider it justifiable to ask a high price for this guitar and then provide us with pickups that really need to be replaced?3. Unprotected pickup mountings - The bridge pickup is in danger here. It has to be cranked up pretty high due to the level of the strings passing above it, and it is in prime position to receive a pick strike or to have the coil winding tape rubbed through by constant, unavoidable finger pressure. Simply affixing plastic mounting rings, costing but a few dollars, would have prevented this issue. Or providing pickups with covers!I must say that despite these drawbacks I really love this guitar. It is the best playing, best looking guitar I own. But it should, for the price, be much better!...
