Dean V 79 Electric Guitar, Set Neck, Cherry Sunburst

This review is from: Dean V 79 Electric Guitar, Set Neck, Cherry SunburstI have 17 different guitars from vintage to modern and have always wanted a "Flying V" type guitar. I have everything from vintage USA made instruments to modern Asian made beauties (vintage Les Pauls, Agile and Ibanez) so I've got a pretty good variety of instruments I own and play to compare to this guitar. The Dean is a reissue of the classic Deans from my formative years. This one is made in Korea to the specs of the '79 model USA Deans from several years ago. I would say that the quality of this instrument is right up there with the best Asia has to offer. The guitar is just drop-dead gorgeous and plays like a dream! The finish is extremely well done and the flamed maple top is very pretty in stage lights. The binding is nicely applied and the zebra Dean humbuckers look and (most importantly) sound amazing. I have many of my guitars equipped with aftermarket pickups. I can say for sure that I will not be changing these pickups out for Duncans or Dimarzios anytime soon! The voicing of these pickups is very similar to my EMG 81/85 equipped axes without some of the punch of the active electronics. They have truly captured the tone of the Dean USA pickups from the late 70's to early 80's. I am impressed. I was only able to find one "finish flaw" and it was where the binding for the neck and body meet, but I've seen some color bleed like that on Gibson's I own as well, so no biggie. Also, to include Grover tuners on a guitar in this price range is pretty amazing as well! The frets are nicely crowned and there are no sharp edges along the fretboard. The nut is also cleanly cut (albeit plastic) and is probably the only thing I plan on changing on the guitar in the short term. There is a lot of torque on the nut due to the extreme angle the V'd headstock makes with the tuning machines, so plan on replacing the nut with bone or graphite pretty much right away. The guitar comes strung with D'Addario 10's that feel just right. I didn't even have to make a neck adjustment when I got her out of the box! It was pretty much tune her up and let her rip. And rip she does! This guitar sounds perfect for hard rock or metal, but cleans up very nicely as well. The neck pickup is extremely sweet and the volume controls are very responsive and increase the tonal versatility of this guitar. It is also nicely weighted (not too heavy like some of my Les Pauls) and the big headstock makes the guitar balance nicely on a strap. If something happened to this one I would definitely buy another one and I have already recommended this to some friends who are looking for a nice V without the $1200 price tag of a Gibson. To the "keeper of the flame of Dean guitars," please keep these reissues coming! Do yourself a favor if you're looking for a cool retro V and pick one of these up before they are gone....

This review is from: Dean V 79 Electric Guitar, Set Neck, Cherry SunburstAnother amazing guitar from Dean. I purchased this guitar to add to my collection, and am once again impressed with another Dean guitar. Of my 18 guitars, this is now right at the top of my list of favorites (sorry Gibson). To me, Dean necks are the most comfortable and this is no exception. This guitar actually feels lighter than my Dean VX, which I find funny since this is a much higher quality guitar. The sound through my Peavey Windsor half stack is perfect for the blues / hair metal / 80's butt rock that I enjoy playing. A friend who is a much better musician than me offered me double what I paid after playing it last night, but I told him to go find his own. Own a set neck for the price of a bolt on and buy this guitar! If you don't like it, maybe my friend will buy yours because I'm not selling!...
