This review is from: AXL Badwater SRO Electric Guitar, Crackle BlackI wanted a cheap guitar to not lose any sleep over if it got destroyed or stolen at work. I've only been playing for six months, so this is a novice's review. Here is what I got for my 90 buck purchase of this guitar on Amazon:Wood: Claims to be solid alder and it sounds nice acoustically. Good heft for my tastes, not too light. The neck and body join is really tight, the neck is on the thin side as guitars go. The crackle finish is a cost saver, but it is more interesting than the satin gloss used on many low budget guitars I have seen.Hardware: Would not hold tuning out of the box and I almost sent it back. After I tightened the tuners it holds tuning much better now. The metal looks like you might expect on a cheap guitar but I think it is better than what is on my niece's low budget Dean but the antiquing may disguise it a bit. The volume knob is scratchy no matter how much I fiddle with it. Mine had no jagged fret ends, but there is a slight gap noticeable below some of the frets. I haven't used the tremolo, but it does not look encouraging with the cheap looking bridge.Pickups: Maybe there is a problem with the wiring, but the single coils and humbucker are all very noisy. That said, the single coils sound good enough and loud enough for me to enjoy over the noise. The humbucker is incredibly noisy. It sounds like the gain is turned way up even when it is off. Something I need to work on.Setup: The nut is too tall making the action high but playable. I may get adventurous and file it down. Someone did a surprisingly good job setting the intonation as it is better than on my other three guitars. Conclusion: The hardware and electronics are not as good as you can get with a good 200 dollar used guitar like my Godin and Danelectro, so I recommend you consider a used one of that type before spending the regular 200 dollar price on this model. For under 100 dollars I am pleased with my purchase. I really like the wood's acoustic tone and the shaping. Currently, Amazon has one similar Axl model under 100 bucks, the non-relic version AXL Marquee SRO Electric Guitar, Sunburst. These prices change daily, but for now that one is under 85 dollars. The bones are nice enough to make this a great bargain guitar to mess around with....
This review is from: AXL Badwater SRO Electric Guitar, Crackle BlackI was hoping for the best after watching Premier Guitar's Gold Star review. I ended up sending it back TWICE hoping that I'd get a better one each time. I was mistaken. Each one had issues that show either a lack of production QC or a lack of proper storage by Amazon. The necks have all had issues, either warped, bumpy, or terribly bad frets (unlevel and sticking off the fretboard). 2 of the 3 nuts were not cut properly (way too high). The bottom line is that they could not be set up to a reasonable level (by a professional luthier) that any decent guitar should be capable of. Note that we could not get the action at the 12th fret to less than 4 mm without frets buzzing all over the place. So, buyer beware - buy one with the expectation that it will have issues or buy one locally so you can be sure that the local dealer has gotten a good one and set it up well enough to play. The one good thing is that the sound on all of them was better than expected, nice range of tones, clean is very nice and clean, and the humbuckers give a deep darker tone. If you can get one that is playable, it could be a good guitar. Also, has anybody noticed Amazon saying they have "1 left in stock, order soon" all over the place? Well, I got the last one 2 times in a row. Hmmmmm.....??!!...
This review is from: AXL Badwater SRO Electric Guitar, Crackle BlackThis is a great guitar with no buzzing frets or noise in the output in any switch position. I would say for beginners that this guitar has medium-ish but not giant frets and that giant frets are much easier to play. The guitar is great looking the pick guard has a bit of brown tint as does the paint. Some guitars have bigger frets and you might be better off with say a Jackson, or Fender, or such with larger frets. The finger board is not as nice as a more expensive guitar but not bad. I think the appearance is well worth the price but it is not as playable as a Jackson or a Schecter....
