This review is from: Gibson Melody Maker Electric Guitar, Single Pick-up, Satin Vintage SunburstRemember when you could find a good Gibson Les Paul Junior or a Les Paul Studio for under $500? Yeah, I don't either but I sure can dream.Luckily, you don't have to break the bank to get a real, honest-to-goodness, made-in-the-USA Gibson electric guitar. The 1959 Gibson Melody Maker on which this reissue is based was a student model. Slightly thinner than the Les Paul Junior and featuring single-coil pickups it lacked all adornment while retaining quality hardware for those who needed an entry-level guitar.Fast forward nearly fifty years and it's the one remaining USA Gibson electric just about anyone can afford! This reissue retains some stellar features of the original such as Kluson tuners, super-hot single-coil pickups and the classic soft-C shaped neck set into a lightweight mahogany body. Gibson saves a bit of cash by offering the guitar in three satin finishes: black, white and vintage sunburst. None of the finishes are going to amaze those looking for the glitz of a Les Paul, but luckily skips the overbearing poly finish that most inexpensive guitars rely upon. The whole package is wrapped up in a lightweight mahogany body that is easy on the shoulder. The only thing Gibson should have upgraded but did not was the vintage wraparound bridge. If you pick up a Melody Maker I'd highly recommend the classic Gibson "lightning bar" compensating bridge as a drop-in replacement to solve some intonation issues. If you're looking for a classic single-coil guitar and think your only options at $500 are Telecasters think again. The Gibson Melody Maker is an excellent, American-made guitar that is sure to surprise you....
